This report analyses the adoption of digital technology in agriculture and food systems across ASEAN Member States, based on insights from the ASEAN–Japan Symposium on Accelerating Digitalisation in Agriculture and Food Systems to Promote Sustainable Agricultural Development in the ASEAN Region, held in Vung Tau, Viet Nam, from 30 September to 1 October 2024.
Globally and regionally, the use of digital technologies in agriculture and food value chains has gained significant momentum in recent years. Digitalisation is poised to play a pivotal role in enhancing productivity, strengthening resilience, and addressing critical challenges such as the adverse impacts of climate change and growing market uncertainties. In the ASEAN region, governments and stakeholders, including farmers, face an urgent need to tackle these challenges through effective technology adoption.
Various initiatives – such as the deployment of drones, the Internet of Things (IoT), precision agriculture techniques, and e-commerce platforms – are already being implemented in several ASEAN Member States. These efforts are advancing the digital transformation of agriculture and food systems, benefiting both farmers and consumers. Additionally, the ASEAN–Japan MIDORI Cooperation Plan has emerged as a significant partnership framework for knowledge and technology transfer, offering a valuable contribution to accelerating digitalisation efforts in the region.
This report synthesises and analyses the state of technology adoption, challenges, and policy instruments in AMS, drawing on discussions amongst policymakers, experts from private companies, and academia. It provides actionable recommendations for policymakers and stakeholders to further promote digitalisation in ASEAN’s agriculture and food systems, supporting sustainable development and shared prosperity.
