Rio de Janeiro, 18 November 2024: The Think 20 (T20) Summit, a premier platform for global think tanks and research institutions, concluded its 2-day meeting in Rio de Janeiro. The event brought together leaders from national and international think tanks, academia, public and private sectors, and civil society to deliberate on key policy recommendations formulated for the G20 Leaders’ Summit.

Co-hosted by the Brazilian Center for International Relations (CEBRI), Alexandre de Gusmão Foundation (FUNAG), Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA), and the Rio de Janeiro City Hall, the T20 Brazil Summit was a critical precursor to the G20 Leaders' Summit. Discussions revolved around six thematic task forces:

  1. Fighting Inequalities, Poverty, and Hunger
  2. Sustainable Climate Action and Inclusive Just Energy Transitions
  3. Reforming the International Financial Architecture
  4. Trade and Investment for Sustainable and Inclusive Growth
  5. Inclusive Digital Transformation
  6. Strengthening Multilateralism and Global Governance

These task forces aimed to enhance international cooperation and reinforce global institutions, reflecting the overarching theme, ‘Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet.’

ERIA’s Key Contributions

As Co-chair of Task Force 6 on Multilateralism and Governance, Dr Venkatachalam Anbumozhi, Senior Research Fellow for Innovations at ERIA, led discussions and contributed to the task force's critical findings and recommendations. These focused on addressing urgent global challenges such as climate change, inequality, and geopolitical tensions through strengthened multilateral cooperation.

T20 Communiqué and Implementation Roadmap

The T20 Summit culminated in the adoption of the T20 Communiqué, accompanied by an implementation roadmap outlining actionable steps, specific timelines, responsible working groups, and mechanisms for monitoring progress. The roadmap was shared with the G20 Sherpa and Finance Tracks ahead of the G20 Leaders’ Summit to ensure timely integration into the official G20 agenda.

Influence on the G20 Agenda

The outcomes of the T20 Summit significantly influenced the discussions and decisions at the G20 Leaders’ Summit held on 18–19 November 2024. The G20 Rio de Janeiro Leaders' Declaration incorporates key achievements of Brazil’s G20 presidency, including:

  • The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty
  • The Task Force on Global Mobilization Against Climate Change
  • A Call to Action on Global Governance Reform

The T20 Communiqué and implementation roadmap are available at T20 Brazil Communiqué, while the full G20 Leaders’ Declaration can be accessed at https://www.g20.org/en/documents/g20-rio-de-janeiro-leaders-declaration
