The Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) experts participated in a workshop on AEC Blueprint Midterm Review (MTR), which was hosted by the Brunei Government and the University of Brunei Darussalam, in Brunei on 7 January, 2012.
Members of government, business and academia participated in the workshop, including H. E. Haji Nazmi Mohammad, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. ERIA made a presentation on the outcomes from its AEC Scorecard Phase II project and the outlines of on-going AEC MTR project. Based on these presentations the Workshop discussed variety of issues pertaining to the establishment of AEC: physical connectivity (transportation and communication); labor mobility; innovation and technology transfer; balance of regional and sub-regional initiatives; and publicity of AEC measures.
The workshop participants also held discussions on various questionnaires prepared by the ERIA Study Team for the AEC Blueprint MTR. They agreed on a number of measures in order to ensure a wide participation of stakeholders and questionnaire respondents in Brunei for the Brunei country report under the ERIA MTR project.
The Brunei country report together with the country reports of the other 9 ASEAN member states as well as the integrative report, will together form ERIA's AEC MTR report. This will be submitted to ASEAN Economic Ministers in their summer meeting this year.
