Many CCUS projects are currently in the developmental stage. It is expected that several CCUS projects will commence operations in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and potentially Brunei Darussalam before 2030. Additionally, a cross-border CCUS project may be realised shortly after 2030, as Indonesia and Malaysia aim to establish themselves as regional CCUS hubs. However, the success of CCUS development in the region will depend on how effectively the region addresses challenges in technology development, economics, and, crucially, public acceptance and social licence to operate.
The public has a limited understanding of CCUS technology as an emerging solution for climate mitigation, including its associated risks and benefits. This lack of understanding impacts public perception and attitudes towards CCUS projects. Negative perceptions could lead to rejection of these projects or, at the very least, cause delays. Therefore, public engagement during project development is essential. Recognising that public acceptance will play a critical role in the success of CCUS projects, the ACN is organising a knowledge-sharing conference to address these issues.
