East Asia Summit (EAS) Hydrogen Workshop

Completed

Carbon neutrality has become a globally relevant issue since COP 26 and hydrogen is highlighted as one an important zero emission technology in the East Asia Summit (EAS) region. Hydrogen is a very versatile fuel which can be used for power generation, vehicles, heating, and space missions, and can therefore replace fossil fuels, coal, oil, and gas.

The ‘ERIA East Asia Summit (EAS) Hydrogen Workshop’ will focus on hydrogen demand and production potential in the EAS region in comparison to the global situation and outlook of hydrogen.

Production potential in the EAS region should include the use of unused energy including hydropower sources in isolated areas, gas flaring at oil and gas production sites, and low-ranked coal. While considering issues and challenges surrounding hydrogen technology development, hydrogen policies of EAS countries, especially those of the hydrogen technology frontrunners such as Japan, play a crucial role in achieving a carbon-neutral society by 2050 by pioneering the creation of optimal hydrogen supply networks in the EAS region and setting up a conducive environment for hydrogen business.

This workshop will be opened with remarks from the Director of Advanced Energy Systems and Structure Division, Agency for Natural Resources and Energy (ANRE), Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) Japan, followed by keynote speeches from ERIA, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and METI Japan. After that, the Working Group that consists of selected EAS countries’ representatives will discuss how to promote hydrogen energy in the region in terms of policy, technology, and finance.

The workshop is hosted by Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) Supported by Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI), Japan.
