Challenges & Opportunities of Indonesian Automotive Industry Development in the Era of CASE and MaaS

Thu, 1 December 2022

Indonesia is a large country with a population of 270 million and accounts for about half of the GDP of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Among these, the automobile industry is the second largest production in ASEAN after Thailand, with annual sales of over 1 million vehicles. In Indonesia, a presidential decree in 2019 set out the promotion of electric vehicles (EVs), and the strengthening of automobile production, including EVs, is something that is largely positioned in the national development strategy. Currently, the Ministry of Industry of Indonesia sets a target of EV penetration, which will be 25 per cent of total vehicle sales in 2030. The government also tries to develop the EV battery Ecosystem by strengthening the battery production capacities within the country. This was also a major focus of the G20 under the Indonesian chairmanship this year.

In 2023, Indonesia will be the chair of the ASEAN Summit. The development of the country's automotive industry is an important issue not only for Indonesia but also for the regional economic development of ASEAN. In particular, as new trends surrounding the automotive, such as CASE (Connected, Autonomous, Service/Sharing, and Electrified) and MaaS (Mobility as a Service) based on digitalisation, are growing, and there is an urgent need for all sectors involved in the automotive industry to formulate strategies to take advantage of these changes as an opportunity to make a big leap forward. The aim of this workshop is to stimulate discussion by inviting people from governments, academia and industries for the further development of the Indonesian automotive industry in the CASE and MaaS era.
