Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Pre-Workshop: The ASEAN Power Grid (APG) in Decarbonizing ASEAN Power Sector

Completed

Given the changes in the international environment for energy, it is important to progress in the energy transition while considering different national circumstances. This way, Asian nations can simultaneously secure a stable supply of energy, sustainable economic growth, and mitigate climate change.

Aligned to the respective national policies and legislations, Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) is expected to be a platform for information sharing, knowledge exchange, and implementation of measures in decarbonization. AZEC provides financial support to boost investment in clean energy infrastructures, including power grid, to secure interoperability of clean technologies and to strengthen human resources capacity.

Acceleration of the energy transition should allow for various and practical pathways which are tailored to meet the circumstances of each country, including in the Asian region which is experiencing rapid increases in the energy demand due to economic growth. In ASEAN for instance, to meet the growing electricity power demand while pursuing the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in ASEAN, power generation capacity improvement from renewable energy (RE) and multilateral power trading arrangements in ASEAN under the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) initiative have been taken.

Aligned with AZEC’s priorities, Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) is planning to expand knowledge-related support to the Community. One of the activities is to host a pre-workshop on AZEC and the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) in Decarbonizing ASEAN Power Sector.

The pre-workshop will be held to deepen understanding of the APG initiative and AZEC activities and to discover possible future cooperations in all related projects. Experts from cross-cutting sector related to power grid system in ASEAN region will be invited to enlighten the discussion on the challenges and opportunities of APG and how AZEC’s support can appropriately fill the gap in the APG program implementation.
