The Symposium entitled "Evolving ASEAN Society and Establishing Sustainable Social Security Net" jointly organized by ERIA, Harvard University Asia Vision 21 and Central Institute for Economic Management (CIEM) was held on 26 October 2010 in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The symposium was officially opened by the Prime Minister of Vietnam, H.E. Mr. Nguyen Tan Dung, and was attended by around 250 policy makers, academic experts and business representatives. The speakers were prominent scholars from leading research institutes in East Asia Summit member countries and the United States.

The symposium recognized that ASEAN and Asia as a whole will increasingly play an important role in spurring both intra-regional and world economic growth. The symposium recommended focus on working on long term challenges towards the expansion of middle-income population in the region, impact of prolonged low-fertility rate and rapid aging population, improving financial access and technical efficiency of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), establishment of viable social security system, energy security, and natural disaster management and continuous capacity building programs.

The report of the symposium was presented to the 17th ASEAN Summit. The Chairman's statement of the 5th East Asia Summit noted the report of this symposium.
